Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment Methanol - Effects of Inhalation Exposure to Occupational Levels

ثبت نشده
چکیده

1. Methanol is extensively and rapidly absorbed by all routes of exposure passing into the body water. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that, with the exception of local effects such as irritation, the effects of methanol exposure via inhalation would be comparable to those from dietary exposure. As part of the ongoing review of the potential effects of chronic low level dietary methanol exposure, the Committee asked to see data on the effects of occupational exposure to methanol to determine whether there was any information that could be relevant to the assessment of chronic oral exposure to low levels of methanol.

3. It is well established that methanol has serious acute toxic effects which occur at high levels of exposure, and arise from the accumulation of formate. In primates, formate binds directly to, and inhibits, cytochrome oxidase, leading to disruption of cellular function, notably in the nervous system, and subsequent damage. Metabolic acidosis also occurs. However, much less is known about whe...
